Undergraduate Focus: University hosts engineering competition
Is it possible to build the lightest scaled transmission tower that is able to pass the four loading test with a breeze? The team from Tonji University, Shanghai, China did. With its scaled model of just 43 grammes, the team emerged as the first place prize winner in the 7th Inter-University Invitational Civil Engineering Competition (IUICEC).
The IUICEC was hosted by the School of Engineering Technology and Infrastructure (SETI) of Kuala Lumpur Infrastructure University College (KLIUC) recently at the university campus. The IUICEC is a biennial civil engineering competition organised by civil engineering students of Tsinghua University, Beijing, China and was first held in the year 2000. The previous IUICEC was held at the National University of Singapore. As this year’s host, KLIUC received participants from 11 universities, among them the Hanyang University, Korea; University of Hong Kong; Tonji University, China; Monash University, Australia, Universiti Tenaga Nasional (UNITEN), and Universiti Teknologi Petronas (UTP).
The four-day competition was a platform for civil engineering students to develop their skills and creativity in structure design and model fabrication. The content of the 7th IUICEC includes three parts, which are model design, fabrication and tests.
KLIUC is proud to host such an event with participation from Asia and Australia. This event is a part of KLIUC’s continuous efforts and commitment in providing a platform for students to showcase their work. The next IUICEC will be held at Monash University, Australia in 2014.
KLIUC offers a wide spectrum of programmes from the areas of Engineering, ICT, architecture, construction management, quantity surveying, communications, English, business management, E-commerce, integrated marketing communication, biotechnology, network technology, sports management and foundation studies.
