TAYLOR UNIVERSITY IT (2)

Undergraduate Focus: Merging industry experience with theory

Hardip Singh Rekhraj, a lecturer in Taylor’s University School of Communication, is well-known in the faculty for his passion in bringing the best out of his students.
A seasoned public relations practitioner of over a decade and a talented orator, Hardip served as senior communications strategist at a renowned public relations consultancy in Kuala Lumpur prior to joining the American-Malaysian Chamber of Commerce as corporate communications manager. His tried and tested leadership skills and industrial experience hold him in good stead as a communications lecturer at Taylor’s University.
“The dean and lecturers spend a considerable amount of time understanding the nature of our Gen-Y students, as well as identifying contemporary teaching and learning trends,” Hardip says of Taylor’s teaching techniques. “New-age students, especially those in the communications faculty, are tech savvy, achievement-oriented, and team-spirited.”
Bearing this in mind, the School of Communication crafts practical projects to provide a holistic education experience even to the most discerning learner in the classroom. By simulating the workings of the industry, students are subjected to myriad situations that demand critical-thinking, creativity, resourcefulness and collaborative effort.
In a nutshell, the programmes at Taylor’s University School of Communication are designed to provide a well-rounded academic education for students seeking a balance of theory and practice.
“Project-based learning is imperative in this context; it provides a realistic outlook of the communication industry and it arms our students with the theoretical, analytical and practical skillsets that make them job-ready by the time they graduate,” Hardip adds. “This is in line with the mission of Taylor’s University, which is to become ‘Top Employers’ Top Choice University’ by year 2016.”
By the end of each class, students are able to demonstrate critical thinking on key issues, exposure to contemporary business practices, acquisition of hands-on campaign planning and implementation, as well as competency in the usage of new media technologies.

The TWCS provides full tuition scholarships for recipients to pursue a foundation or degree of their choice in Taylor's University.

The scholarship also offers internship opportunity as a management trainee with top industry partners.

This year, the multinational companies collaborating with Taylor's University for the TWCS are BDO, BMW Group, HSBC Bank Malaysia, Leo Burnett, Leighton Asia, Mandarin Hotel, Shangri-La Hotel, Siemens, Veritas Design Group and Weber Shandwick.

Taylor's University vice-chancellor and president, Datuk Dr Hassan Said, said the scholarship was aimed  at nurturing and producing competent, employable and world-class graduates.

"It is important to nurture the potential of our nation's youth. The TWCS is a platform to develop not only academic excellence, but also produce industry-ready graduates through our association with world class industry professionals.

"We strongly believe in grooming our graduates to be well-rounded individuals through extra-curricular activities outside the classroom. This is clearly projected in this scholarship's tagline,  Don't learn from the world, learn in it," said Hassan.

Dr Hassan said this in his speech during the scholarship presentation ceremony at the Taylor's Lakeside Campus.

The scholarship was open to applicants with SPM, STPM and other pre-university qualifications. This year, TWCS received 1,200 applicants.

Applicants were put through a series of stringent evaluation stages, beginning with the online submission of academic details and an essay about the applicant's challenging moments in their lives and how these have affected them.

Shortlisted candidates underwent two interview stages where they were required to present in front of the Taylor's University scholarship committee and representatives from the industry partners.

Candidates were evaluated based on a number of criteria such as possessing a strong academic background, being actively involved in extra-curricular activities and possessing excellent communication skills and leadership qualities.

The 12 top students will be pursuing their respective fields of study in the School of Business, School of Communication, School of Engineering, School of Hospitality, Tourism and Culinary Arts and School of Architecture, Building and Design.

Stephanie Lai Shen Ai, 18, who will be pursuing Foundation in Science for one year and later in Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering for four years said she was grateful to receive the scholarship.

"There were 1,200 students applied for this prestigious scholarship and I am happy that I am among the 12 recipients. My family, especially my mother, is my biggest supporter. I can't wait to do my internship in Leighton Asia after completing my studies," she said.

Hotel Management student Nurlynnie Azzureenie Abdullah, 18, said:  "This scholarship motivates me to do better in future. I love meeting and serving people and I hope I can establish my own hotel one day."

Nurlynnie will be serving her internship with Mandarin Oriental Kuala Lumpur.

Suraynn Uthaya Selvan, 18, who will be pursuing his studies in architecture,  will be interning with Veritas Architects Sdn Bhd.

Also present at the presentation ceremony were Taylor's Education Group chief executive officer Datuk Loy Teik Ngan and the university's deputy vice-chancellor Pradeep Nair.

Since 2006, TWCS has awarded RM6.6 million worth of full scholarships to more than 100 recipients.

ROAD TRAFFIC: Tap into homegrown technology

I REFER to the letter by FGI, "Use smart traffic lights to ease jams" (NST, June 15) which laments the way our outdated traffic lights are operated.

.
A motorcyclist disregarding traffic rules as he runs a red light at a junction in in Jalan Pandan Indah,Kuala lumpur.
He mentioned how most European cities have adopted smart traffic lights that detect oncoming traffic and change accordingly to allow for smoother traffic flows at interchanges.
He urged the police and Kuala Lumpur City Hall to improve the way road traffic and traffic jams were managed and that we could learn from other countries on how best to manage traffic jams.
We do not need to learn from other countries as our own scientists have developed a smart traffic light system, in use at the intersection going and out of the Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia campus in Bangi since 2003.
The system was developed by Prof Ir Dr Riza Atiq Abdullah O.K. Rahmat from the Engineering and Built Environment Faculty of UKM.
The UKM news portal carried the story on Oct 7, 2010 but until today, no local authority in the country seems to be interested in the system despite some senior officers from the Housing and Local Government Ministry, heads of municipal councils and local governments and senior police officers visiting Riza Atiq and his colleagues at their laboratory in UKM some years ago.
The UKM news portal said many of them were interested but they could not commit because of budget constraints (The full story, dated October 2010, can be read at the UKM news portal).
I think it is not so much budget constraints but, perhaps, other considerations that have made local authorities decide to continue with their current contracts of having the antiquated system.
Perhaps if there is enough pressure from motorists complaining about having to continue to put up with such an antiquated system of traffic lights all over the country, local authorities will open their eyes to the availability of a homegrown smart system already in place.
The UKM news portal mentioned that the police were also interested in the smart surveillance cameras used in the system developed by Riza Atiq.
Consequently Riza Atiq had roped in a psychologist to his team to see how they could detect shady or suspicious characters for the police's crime prevention work.
At present, the smart cameras, mounted on poles as high as street lights can zoom in on the registration numbers of vehicles and measure their speeds.
Fabricated at their lab in UKM, these cameras can be used in all weather conditions. They are also equipped with infra-red technology for use in darkness or areas with no street lights.
They can also detect accidents and are programmed to alert the control centre to call for aid.
Such a system could also be used in car parks of shopping malls in the Klang Valley considering the increase in the number of attacks on women in car parks reported in the past few weeks.
Since the police are aware of the availability of such a system developed by our own scientists, I wonder why they are not roping in Riza Atiq for such crime prevention efforts.

Rejal Arbee, Shah Alam, Selangor

SIFE UTHM Reached Another Milestone

A seven days “Indonesia Outreach Programme” had been successfully accomplished by Students In Free Enterprise of Universiti Tun Hussein Onn Malaysia (SIFE UTHM) in Medan City of North Sumatra, Indonesia. This was another overseas initiative of SIFE UTHM since the “Route To China” dated back in 2008.
Started from May 26th and ended on June 1st 2011, fourteen energetic and passionate youths from SIFE UTHM, known as SIFErs, embarked on a journey with the mission to spread their spirit of “Bridging the difference through unity”. Besides that, they would like to bring the name of SIFE into Indonesia as there is no SIFE team yet.
The programme kick-started in the Faculty of Language and Arts, Universitas Negeri Medan (UNIMED), where 50 students were involved in the knowledge sharing sessions carried out by SIFErs through group discussions and presentations for two consecutive days. Both sides successfully built up their networks and the idea “To create a better world through the positive power of business” was delivered.
The journey continued with a visit to Yayasan Pendidikan Shafiyyatul Amaliyyah on the 30th and Perguruan Islam Al-Ulum Terpadu on the 31st respectively. Both events were officiated by the UTHM escort officer, Miss Ng Wee Fern with the person in charge from each school. Fellow SIFErs managed to instill knowledge on five topics: HIV/AIDS, Environment, Entrepreneurship, Nutrition and Future Planning, through presentations and educational games.
Apart from the formal sessions, SIFErs also spared their time to tour around Medan City. The observations of the local living conditions truly inspired the members to plan their community projects in the near future. The final day ended with a trip to the well known Toba Lake to observe the local culture and tourism development.
Throughout the journey, an estimated of at least 150 people were impacted, directly or indirectly. Representatives from Indonesia and Malaysia who participated in this programme managed to gain some valuable insights through various activities and communications. It was indeed a great learning experience for UTHM SIFErs to reach out the community and widen their horizon, besides regular lecture sessions in the university.

UM top among Malaysian universities

KUALA LUMPUR: Universiti Malaya (UM) reaffirmed its status as the premier university for the fourth year in a row as it achieved its best position in the QS Asian University Rankings 2012 in 35th overall and the first among all higher learning institutions in the country.

UM extended its domination as the top university in Malaysia since the first QS Asian University Rankings was introduced four years ago and has seen a steady improvement in rankings year by year.

"In this year's Asian rankings revealed by QS, UM achieved an overall score of 71.4 out of a possible 100 and ranked fourth for inbound and outbound student exchange.

"It was also ranked number one in Malaysia for academic reputation and employer reputation," said its vice-chancellor Tan Sri Dr Ghauth Jasmon in a statement today.

He said UM was also ranked number one for all faculty areas including Arts & Humanities, Engineering & Technology, Life Sciences & Medicine and Social Sciences & Management with the exception of Natural Sciences which saw UM being ranked in second place.

Ghauth said UM's research values were further reflected by the number of citations received at 17,520 and the university had produced a total of 9,161 papers from 2007 until 2011.

"We are delighted and honoured by this year's ranking as we have done our best to improve in all aspects, especially in bound and outbound student exchange," he said.

He said the ranking was the result of the outstanding work of UM's management, staff, students and efforts of its stakeholders and the Ministry of Higher Education in supporting its never-ending quest for excellence.

"In the overall picture, we are looking at the Asian rankings as the springboard to achieving our ultimate aim of being among the top 100 world- ranked universities in 2015," he added.

QS Asian University rankings represent the most extensive study of Asian institutions ever conducted with almost 500 universities assessed and include, among other things, responses to academic and employer surveys by QS. -- BERNAMA

UM uses serial number to tackle fake scrolls

KUALA LUMPUR: Amid the controversy over fake degrees, Universiti Malaya said it has taken precautions by introducing serial numbers for its degree scrolls.

Its international and corporate relations director, Zarina Zainol Abidin, said each scroll had a unique serial number, an improved certificate design and other safety features.
"We also offer a service for employers and the public to check and verify the authenticity of our degrees through the university's online portal," she told the New Straits Times.
Higher Education director-general Professor Datuk Dr Rujhan Mustafa said the ministry encouraged all institutions of higher learning to implement security measures to avoid forgery.
He added that those buying fake degrees were only "cheating themselves".
"They should earn their degrees from a reputable institution."
He said the police were investigating the sale of fake academic scrolls, which came to light recently.
Police last week busted a syndicate believed to have raked in millions of ringgit by selling fake academic scrolls over the last nine years.
The sale of these degrees was accompanied by a grand convocation, where "graduates" and their parents would be invited.
According to police, the syndicate went as far as getting a man to pose as the dean or chancellor of a university during the convocation.
Malaysian Employers Federation vice-president Dr Michael Chiam Tow Hui said it was difficult to verify the authenticity of their employees' qualifications.
"In many cases, the employees themselves are unaware that they possessed fake qualifications. If they attempt to gain employment by intentionally producing a fake degree, then it would constitute fraud."
